Things to do in Cuba

While spending the day in Cuba, Missouri today, I researched things to do while in Cuba. There were a variety of things to do according to a web sight we read, a few of which we had already done. There was the visit to the Crawford County Historical Museum, where we had a fantastic tour by Ken, a civil war historian. Ken was loaded with interesting facts regarding the Civil War and local individuals of past prominence. We spent an incredibly interesting two hours with Ken. This photo is taken from their web site.

Also of interest in Cuba are the number of murals around town. There are 12 murals in town, easily walkable. Their motto is "Route 66 Mural City". There are murals depicting many things, all of which tell a story and a connection with history.

The one thing the website missed which meant the most to us was visiting with the locals. We started the day visiting with Connie at the Wagon Wheel Motel. (A view of the motel). Connie suggested breakfast at Shelly's Route 66 Cafe. She even offered her car to us in order to avoid the rain. In that we are on a motorcycle, we are prepared for rain so we donned our rain gear and went for a brief walk with incredible gratitude for a stranger offering us her vehicle.

We found Shelly's with no problem. Upon entering we were greeted by strangers who warmly received us. After we introduced ourselves our new found friends began asking questions regarding our journey. They were full of insight on what to do along the way. We had a fabulous meal and even better conversation. If you are in these parts, stop at Shelly's. Thanks to Shelly, Lenny, Roger, Nancy and Willis the cook for a great morning.

This great stop for dinner is located right next to The Wagon Wheel Motel. Great Bar-B-Que!

The one thing I think the website missed regarding things to see and do while in Cuba is to visit with her people. Everyone we met here seem to work hard in order to earn a living but work even harder to be friendly, warm and caring human beings. This is a town that could easily serve as an example of what seems to be missing from so many of our towns these days. A trip down historic Route 66 is more than a trip down memory lane; in Cuba, it is a trip down what we all need to embrace for a better tomorrow.
