Arizona

Last night, I ended by saying we would go out to dinner at the Hotel el Rancho. Walking into their lobby is absolutely stunning. All of the food coming out of the kitchen looked incredible. And we shared the Ronald Reagan burger and Jelly Bellys; delicious.

We awoke this morning to 37 degrees. A bit too chilly to ride so we just waited for the weather to warm to over 50. We got away at about 10:30. Beautiful scenery leaving New Mexico. Arizona was just a few miles down the road from where we stayed.. We certainly saw on the weather forecast that today would be windy. Why can weather forecasters always get the forecast wrong until you need them to be wrong. Windy was an understatement for our Arizona arrival. At one point we had to exit I-40 and find some back road go-arounds just to avoid the way the wind was pushing us around. We did a Route 66 detour to take in Painted Desert and Petrified Forest. The scenery was spectacular. And as usual, photos can't do this place justice particularly on an overcast and rainy day.

This used to be the Painted Desert Inn on Route 66 back in the day. Today it serves as a museum.

This represents where Route 66 used to pass through the Painted Desert. The power poles represent where the roadway was located.

This is a petrified log that was supported by concrete in 1917 in order to preserve it as long as possible. It is known as Agate Bridge. It is neither agate, or a bridge; at least you can't cross it.

A great view of some petrified wood.

All of the dark spots you see in the valley are petrified wood.

Nice big chunks of petrified wood.

And we are back on Route 66 in Holbrook, AZ. We are spending the night at the historic Wigwam Motel where their sign asks, "Have you stayed in a Wigwam lately?" Their lobby is beautiful and the room very comfortable. They have older model vehicles parked in front of all the wigwams.

Till tomorrow.
