We left Muncho Lake Lodge at about 6:00 this morning for a rather long day. We drove 364 miles today through some additionally spectacular scenery. Every day has been spectacular.
Today we saw warning signs for bison. We had already been
alerted as to where we might see some.
We were not disappointed. They were so gracefully grazing on
wild flowers on the shoulder of the highway. You may ask why I call them Bison
instead of buffalo; North America does not, nor ever has had buffalo. Early
settlers from Europe were used to buffalo back home and these resembled the
version from Europe so they mistakenly called them buffalo. So Give me a home,
where the buffalo roam; if you yearn for that, you need to move.
We passed so many rivers and great bridges; I can’t begin to
recount all of the names. Here is a little Mackinac Bridge over a river.
Yukon Territory and British Columbia took turns welcoming us
today. From our location last night, we turned west on 97 and it is right on
the border between the two. 97 changed names in the Yukon to Highway 1, which
snakes north and south of the border. I believe we crossed the border 5 times.
And we stopped at the Sign Tree Forest where there are
thousands of signs erected from all over the world. This custom developed when
the Alaska Highway was being constructed 75 years ago. Workers affixed signs
from home as a reminder of home. The original sign has been preserved and is
the last photo.
We end the day in Johnson’s Crossing. The last 100 miles of
the day took turns threatening rain, or actually raining. For a short while we
even had some hail thrown in just to keep things interesting. The first 100
miles we saw the Highway being worked on. That meant that the asphalt had been
removed and they rebuilt the road bed; nothing but gravel. Today was a 10 hour
day on the road. Happy to be checked in our motel for the night!
Till Tomorrow!
